Gen.G Esports did not drop a game. Their best-of-three against Hanwha Life Esports on August 13 ended 2-0, although the scoreline hides how differently the two wins came together.
The opener was the cleaner of the pair. GEN finished it with roughly 8,900 more gold than HLE and eight towers to four, and they took the only Baron of the game in 38:51. Ruler was the steadiest piece of it, going 5/1/5 on Caitlyn with 27,307 damage, the most on his side. Dragons were split three apiece, so GEN's edge seemingly came from structures and Baron rather than from neutral objectives alone.
Chovy takes the second
Game 2 was another matter. Kills finished 21 to 19 and the gold gap closed to about 1,500, which is about as narrow as a decisive game gets. Chovy made the difference on Cassiopeia, going 10/4/7 with 29,365 damage, and GEN's 4-1 dragon count arguably gave them the cushion that the kill score did not. Both sides took a Baron, but GEN closed it out in 31:53.
Around Chovy, the supporting cast did quiet but useful work. Duro finished the series with 31 assists across Bard and Shen and took part in 93% and 81% of his team's kills. Canyon died just three times over both games while posting kill participation of 80% and 71%.
Kanavi's effort falls short
HLE were not without bright spots. Kanavi was the most destructive player on the map in Game 2, going 11/5/5 on Pantheon with 30,015 damage, more than anyone on either team. The trouble was elsewhere: Zeus went 0/4/13 on Gnar in that game, and Gumayusi's 30,641 damage on Jhin in the opener came with an 0/3/4 line and a 40% kill participation.
That gap between output and impact may be the question HLE carry out of this series. They kept Game 2 close on kills and gold, yet still came away without a map. GEN, meanwhile, leave Week 12 having won one game comfortably and one on the margins, and they did it with a different player carrying each time.
